J&J Talc Claimants Seek to Pre-Empt Company’s Bankruptcy Strategy

A committee representing talc-injury claimants asked for a restraining order forbidding J&J from carving out talc-related liabilities from the rest of the business. J&J has told personal injury lawyers it is considering bankruptcy for a subsidiary as a way to resolve lawsuits and future claims stemming from talc, The Wall Street Journal reported last week.

Said an article in the Wall Street Journal:
People alleging that Johnson & Johnson ’s talc-based baby powder caused their cancers asked a federal court to forbid the company from taking steps to place its talc liabilities in bankruptcy, while lawmakers sought information about the same issue from J&J’s CEO.

Leading the Fight For Victims of Pennsylvania

There have been some 1,200 lawsuits filed on behalf of women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for feminine hygiene. Juries awarded victims $72,000,000 and $55,000,000 in two separate landmark cases against talcum powder manufacturers. Evidence has shown that the manufacturers of talcum powder have known about the health risks of using their products for decades. Despite this knowledge, consumers were not warned of the potential danger of talcum use in the vaginal area.
