Larynx cancer and asbestos exposure

Approximately 8,500 individuals in the United States develop larynx cancer each year, and many of these cases are tied to asbestos. In fact, studies released as long ago as the 1960s indicate that exposure to asbestos places people at an increased risk for developing larynx cancer, and a 2006 investigation performed by the Institute of Medicine definitively named asbestos exposure as one of the causes for larynx cancer.

Larynx cancer

Larynx cancer develops when malignant cells grow in the tissues of one or more of the three main parts of the larynx: the supraglottis, the glottis and the subglottis. The squamous cells on the inside of the larynx are the cells most often impacted by the malignancy.

Signs of larynx cancer include:

  • Sore throat
  • Ear pain
  • Chronic coughing
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Pain or difficulty swallowing
  • Lumps in the neck or throat
  • Changes in the voice

Larynx cancer caused by asbestos occurs when an individual breathes in asbestos fibers that then become lodged in the throat, larynx or voice box. Once there, these tiny fibers can slowly cause the cells in the surrounding tissue to mutate and become cancerous.

Treatment options

A number of different treatments are available for larynx cancer depending on the stage of the disease, the location of the cancerous cells, the size of the tumor, whether this is the first time the patient has had larynx cancer, and whether less invasive treatments are likely to be successful without damaging the patient’s ability to live a normal life.

Treatment options for larynx cancer include:

  • External radiation therapy, internal radiation therapy, surgery & chemotherapy, with more aggressive treatments being used if the cancer has progressed past stage 1.
  • Clinical trials are also being used to test out new ways to eradicate larynx cancer.
    • Current trials involve the use of chemoprevention–where drugs, vitamins and other substances are used to prevent or combat the development of the cancerous cells–and radiosensitizers. Radiosensitizers are drugs that increase a tumor’s sensitivity to radiation, making it easier to eliminate the cancerous cells during radiation treatments.
