Study Indicates That Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Physical Activity Could Extend Life of Lung Disease Victims

A new study has investigated the associations among cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity walking speed, or leisure activity, and lung cancer mortality and all-cause mortality. The study was conducted by Junga Lee, Ph.D., and reported in the journal of Cancer Nursing. Learn More

While the study focused on patients with lung cancer, its findings may be applicable for those with illnesses like mesothelioma which affect the lungs in similar ways.

The study concluded that moderate to high Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Physical Activity were each associated with reduced risks of lung cancer mortality. In addition, slower and same walking speed, and moderately inactive and inactive levels of leisure activity were each associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality.

More specifically, lung cancer patients who engaged in physical activity more than 2.5 hours per week lived significantly longer than those who did not. This may apply to mesothelioma patients as well. Fast walking improves the heart and lung’s ability to supply oxygen to the body, and that cardiorespiratory fitness increased lung cancer patient survivorship.
